# What is Metamask wallet

Metamask is a virtual asset wallet developed in 2016 by ConsenSys, an American blockchain software company. A virtual asset wallet refers to an account that can hold virtual assets such as Ethereum, and through direct interaction with the blockchain, the meta-mask acts as a link to the decentralized app (DAP) and decentralized financial (Defi) services provided by the Ethereum network. It can be used as an extension on the web as well as a mobile phone app.
